Vision Therapy
Some visual conditions cannot be treated adequately with just glasses, contact lenses and/or patching, and are best resolved through a program of Vision Therapy.
Who Benefits from Vision Therapy?
Learning-related Vision Problems -- Learning Disorders
There are many children throughout the nation with perfect 20-20 eyesight who suffer from vision disorders that will greatly affect their ability to learn in school. These learning-related visual problems often go undetected for a lifetime.
There is a difference between sight and vision. Sight is the ability to see, which most of us are born with. Vision is the ability to understand what we see, and is a learned process. Some children do not automatically learn how to use their two eyes at the same time. Their eyes do not instinctively focus and refocus when reading. One of the earliest signs of vision disorder is reading comprehension problems. Children suffering from this disorder will simply avoid reading.
There are no simple, routine school tests designed to detect these vision problems. Signs that may indicate a problem are:
- A book held very close to the eyes - only seven or eight inches away
- Pages counted before reading, only shorter pieces considered
- The head moves back and forth while reading, instead of the eyes
- Finger is used to trace lines in book
- Subvocalization during reading: murmuring or silent moving of lips
- Complaints of blurring, double-vision, or headaches
- Short attention span while reading - child is quickly fatigued
- Homework takes hours and hours, when it shouldn't
- Child seems to read well enough but recalls only portions or has spotty understanding; whereas, if material is read aloud, child has virtually total recall
- The child is well-coordinated, yet has trouble with ball games (softball, tennis, kickball)
- Schoolwork that depends to a large extent upon reading - history or English - is difficult, while subjects such as math and science are learned easily
At Advanced Eyecare, we can help! Our highly trained staff will work with your child using exercises that have been designed to solve these problems. The eye coordination needed to be a good reader will become effortless and automatic.

Poor Binocular (2-eyed) Coordination
Normal healthy vision includes the use of the two eyes as an effective coordinated team (binocular vision). When the two eyes fail to work together easily and effectively, performance in many areas can suffer (reading, sports, depth perception, eye contact, etc.).

Strabismus (Crossed Eyes, Eye Turns, etc.) and Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)
Vision Therapy programs offer much higher cure rates for turned eyes and/or lazy eye when compared to eye surgery, glasses, and/or patching, without therapy.
The earlier the patient receives Vision Therapy the better, however, our office successfully treats patients well past 21 years of age.
Recent scientific research has disproved the long held belief that children with lazy eye, or amblyopia, cant be helped after age 7.

Tests and Treatments for Computer Users
Computer Eyestrain, Computer Vision Syndrome, or CVS, is the number one health complaint of millions of office workers throughout the nation. Constantly focusing on your computer screen will result in overworked eye muscles and painful eyestrain. Symptoms include tired and sore eyes, headaches, blurred vision, and general fatigue. Even people with 20/20 vision are affected by it.
Traditionally, methods of eye testing will not accurately diagnose this problem. We do have the technology available to help you! PRIO testing will determine exactly how your eyes will respond to a computer monitor. We can then prescribe highly specialized PRIO computer glasses, which will alleviate your eyestrain. You will be comfortable, even after hours at the computer.
